ICM2002 Financial Support for Mathematicians from
Developing Countries and Eastern Europe

Circular letter # 3
Subject: ICM2002-CL3: Financial Supports

Dear Colleague:

The Local Organizing Committee of International Congress of Mathematicians 2002 (ICM2002) has already received quite a number of requests concerning financial support for attending ICM2002 in Beijing. The International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the Local Organizing Committee are currently making efforts to obtain donations from Chinese government and foundations to be able to partially support mathematicians from developing countries and
Eastern Europe.

To secure participation of as many mathematicians as possible, the Local Organizing Committee will only support local costs in Beijing. It is expected that applicants will find other means to cover travel costs.

On the other hand, the International Mathematical Union(IMU) will provide a number of travel grants to active young research mathematicians from developing countries to attend ICM2002 in Beijing. And the Chinese Mathematical Society will cover their local expenses.

The financial support programs are divided into three categories:

(1)Support for active young research mathematicians from developing countries

(2)Support for mathematicians from Eastern Europe

(3)Support for senior mathematicians from developing countries

In order to coorperate with IMU to handle the applications and manage the financial supports, the Local Organizing Committee has set up a subcommittee, called Committee for Support of Senior Mathematicians from Developing Countries and Mathematicians from Eastern Europe (CSSMDCEE).

The CSSMDCEE will distribute application forms for grants in later summer 2001. These forms will be made available through the ICM2002 server (http://www.icm2002.org.cn/) and by e-mail.

Applicants will be asked to provide their brief curriculum vitae (including academic education, degree, professional employment), and the lists of publications. Applicants should submit their application forms before January 1, 2002 to the CSSMDCEE to one of the following addresses:

Prof. Dr. Lu, Shanzhen
Department of Mathematics
Beijing Normal University
100875 Beijing, P. R. China
E-mail: icm@bnu.edu.cn
Prof. Dr. Zhang, Yingbo
Department of Mathematics Beijing Normal University
100875 Beijing, P. R. China
E-mail: icm@bnu.edu.cn

All applications will be reviewed and all applicants will be informed about the results immediately after May 1, 2002.

Further questions concerning financial support for mathematicians from Developing Countries and Eastern Europe to attend ICM2002 should be directed to Professor Lu or Professor Zhang.

Sincerely yours,

Ma, Zhiming
President of the Local Organizing Committee
