Lars HÖRMANDER

born January 24, 1931, Mjällby/Blekinge, Sweden
Stockholm University

Worked in partial diffential equations. Specifically, contributed to the general theory of linear differential operators. The questions go back to one of Hilbert's problems at the 1900 congress.

John Willard MILNOR

born February 20, 1931, Orange, New Jersey
Princeton University

Proved that a 7-dimensional sphere can have several differential structures; this led to the creation of the field of differential topology.
