Mathematics is the gate and key of the sciences. Mathematics
is the basis of high technologies. Mathematics is a symbol of
civilization.
It is our city's great honor to be able to host the International
Congress of Mathematicians in 2002, which will be dedicated to
the advancement of such an essential field of human knowledge
at such a crucial moment of the new century.
"We are only overjoyed to receive friends from afar." No words
other than those of Confucius, the ancient Chinese philosopher,
could better express our feeling in anticipation of the guests
of ICM2002. I cordially invite you, on behalf of the citizens
and the Government of Beijing Municipality, to come in harmonic
cooperation to open a new era of Mathematics.
